It was once possibly ahieroglyphic codex, lost with the Spanish destruction of works they could not read. It resurfaced as analphabetic text that claims to have reimplanted the Ancient Word. This essay explores how this rescueof a cultural foundation was possible using a medium very different from the one of the original codex.The process points to an adaptive mechanism: Maya facility with interaction at the textual level as wellas in their cultural vision expressed in their cosmogony.
