| contents | Complementary alternatives in medicine: the case of a religious healer in Buenos Aires, Argentina Mariana Viturro Antropología In this article, I explore the existence of a complementary relationship between biomedicineand alternative medicine in Greater Buenos Aires, where the patient relies on both the services ofhospitals and of Isolina, a «curandera» (healer) residing in La Salada. The patients trust and dependon both health care systems, but the patients themselves are the protagonists of their therapy. Inorder to illustrate the important role the patient plays in this process, I analyse the steps he choosesin the healing process, from the time of his initial attempt to find meaning and explanation for thepain up to the alleviation of this pain. Using both health methods is primarily due to the contrastingspaces, methods and definitions that each method holds and utilises. By indicating the contrastingroles assigned to the patients in the diagnosis and therapy applied by the respective health systems,I propose that the antagonistic relationship that exists between the differing ways of healing can becomplementary. 1998 artículo científico 0325-6669 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=14802007 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=148 Scripta Ethnologica application/pdf Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET) Scripta Ethnologica (Argentina) Vol.XX |
