ARGENTINA Ada Svetlitza de Nemirovsky Rosana González Antropología Both ethnic and national identity are analyzed in the context of a portuguese inmigrant community in the district of La Matanza (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina). Portuguese inmigrants had an outstanding role in activities concerning bricks manufacturing and garden vegetables production. While the whole portuguese community evidence strong national identity, ethnic identity has been constructed and reconstructed by those living in rural areas of the district. The saudade of a Portugal that remains unchangeable as an imagined utopia is present in their everyday life.
