contents Inmigración y metrópolis: Reflexiones acerca de la historia urbana. Alejandro Portes Demografía immigrants capitalism urbanization globalization social networks This article presents an outline of the relationship between migration and the city in its evolution over time.I sketch the central aspects of this historical relation as a prelude to examining three aspects of thecontemporary scene: the various determinants of contemporary labour flows; the political sources ofresistance to international migration; and the renewed protagonist role of metropolitan areas as strategicnodes of the international system. As part of the latter process, I sketch the rise of transnationalism as anovel form of adaptation to immigration and as a potential response to the overriding logic of globalcapitalism. Implications of a migration centered approach to cities for theory and policy are dismissed. 2001 artículo científico 1665-8906 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=15100106 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=151 Migraciones Internacionales application/pdf El Colegio de la Frontera Norte Migraciones Internacionales (México) Num.1 Vol.I
