| contents | The Constitution of the elites in the rise of the Brazilian Imperial State Jurandir Malerba Estudios Culturales Brazilian elites Portuguese Court History of Brazil Two connected phenomena were analysed: the structure of two elites merging in Rio de Janeiro when the Portuguese royal family fled to Brazil in 1808, or rather, the court society that came to Brazil with the Portuguese king and the wealthy classes that financed the kings stay in Brazil for thirteen years. Eventhough the importance of these events in the history of the two countrieswill not be analysed, this encounter leading to the Independence processsome months after the kings return to Portugal should always be kept inmind. Another aim of this research was the cultural codes that favouredcommunications between two distinct societies, or rather, between the courtsociety and the working capitalist groups dedicated to down-to-earthmercantile strategies controlling the credit system, internal commerce andinternational slave trafficking to Brazil.
