contents The effects of orthographic neighborhood in reading and laboratory word identification tasks: a review Eva Rosa Manuel Perea Psicología eye movements lexical access Orthographic neighborhood This paper reviews recent research on the effects of “orthographicneighbors” (i.e., words that can be created by changing one letter of thestimulus item, preserving letter positions, see Coltheart et al., 1977) onreading and laboratory word identification tasks. We begin this paper with aliterature review on the two basic “neighborhood” effects (neighborhoodsize and neighborhood frequency). This review shows that the number ofhigher frequency neighbors is inhibitory in reading. We also examine theinfluence of orthographic structure in form- and repetition-priming effects, which again suggests that orthographic neighbors seem to play an inhibitoryrole in the selection process. Finally, we discuss the empirical evidence in thecontext of current models of visual word recognition and reading. 2000 artículo científico 0211-2159 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=16921208 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=169 Psicológica application/pdf Universitat de València Psicológica (España) Num.2 Vol.21
