contents Syllable-frequency effect in visual word recognition: evidence of sequential-type processing Carlos J. Álvarez Manuel Carreiras Manuel de Vega Psicología lexical access syllable frequency visual word recognition Three experiments examine the syllable-frequency effect during visual wordrecognition in Spanish. Disyllabic words and pseudowords were employedmanipulating the positional frequency of the first and the second syllable aswell as the word frequency (only for words). A standard lexical decision task(Experiment 1) and a temporal separation technique (Experiments 2 & 3), inwhich either the first or the second syllable acted as a prime of the wholestimulus were used, measuring reaction times and errors. The resultsreplicated the inhibitory effect of syllable-frequency obtained in severalprevious experiments in Spanish and offer support for an activational modelincorporating a syllabic level. However, this type of model must incorporatesequential properties: both syllables activate lexical representations but theydo not play exactly the same role, indicating a bias toward the first syllable. The implications of the findings for the notion of a sequential-typeprocessing are discussed. 2000 artículo científico 0211-2159 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=16921209 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=169 Psicológica application/pdf Universitat de València Psicológica (España) Num.2 Vol.21
