contents Does regularity affect the construction and memory of a mental image in the same way it affects a visual trace? Nanfredo Massironi Paola Rocchi Cesare Cornoldi Psicología Perception visual memory representation It has been shown that regularity of a figure aids both its perception and itsretention. The present paper examines how the regularity of a pattern mayinfluence memory of figures contrasted with generated images and howspecific configurations can affect memory. It is assumed that a visual traceand a generated image imply partially different psychological mechanismsand that memory of a generated image is affected by the way it wasconstructed. In four experiments different groups of subjects were invited todraw simple figures on the basis of the memory either of its pictorialpresentation (VT = visual trace) or of the corresponding image generatedfollowing verbal instructions (GI = generated image).Experiment 1 showed that a VT condition generally produces poorermemory than a GI condition, but this difference only occurs with somefigures. Experiment 2 showed that difficulties and peculiarities in the GIcondition are due to the extent to which a subject can find partial elements ofregularities during the construction of a figure. This result was not present ina CVT (constructed visual trace) condition progressively showing thesegments of a figure (Exp. 3) and was present, but to a lesser extent than inthe GI condition, when single segments were presented to the subject, whowas required to imagine the overall resulting pattern (Exp. 4). 2001 artículo científico 0211-2159 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=16922107 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=169 Psicológica application/pdf Universitat de València Psicológica (España) Num.1 Vol.22
