- The role of the avian hippocampus in spatial memory Euan M. Macphail Psicología Avian hippocampal function is surveyed, using data drawn from three areas:conventional laboratory paradigms, pigeon navigation, and food-storing.Damage to the avian hippocampus disrupts performance in laboratory tasksthat tap spatial learning and memory, and also disrupts both pigeon homingand cache recovery by food-storing birds. Further evidence of hippocampalinvolvement in food-storing is provided by the fact that the hippocampus offood-storing birds is selectively enlarged. These findings lend support to thenotion that the hippocampus plays a critical role in spatial learning andmemory. However, avian hippocampal lesions (like mammalianhippocampal lesions) also disrupt certain laboratory tasks that do not havean overt spatial component. Moreover, analysis of the effects ofhippocampal lesions on navigation find, first, that basic navigationalprocesses are left intact, and second, that at least some of the disruption ofhoming may be caused by disruption of the associability of informationderived from the sun compass - a non-spatial deficit. Finally, attempts todemonstrate that the enlarged hippocampus of food-storing birds is associatedwith enhanced spatial memory have failed to deliver conclusive support. Theextensive parallels between effects of hippocampal lesions in birds andmammals suggest that both the spatial and the non-spatial deficits form partof a single syndrome, one that cannot readily be explained in terms ofdisruption of specifically spatial processes. 2002 artículo científico 0211-2159 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=16923106 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=169 Psicológica application/pdf Universitat de València Psicológica (España) Num.1 Vol.23
