contents Explorations of three modes of spatial cognition in the monkey Lucio Rehbein Mark B. Moss Psicología This paper is organized around three major areas: (i) First, we review a seriesof our own studies on spatial cognition of monkeys that had receivedhippocampal resections or fornix transactions in infancy and that appeared tohave recovered from their initial deficit on a left-right spatial discriminationtask. The results from our long-term follow up study of these monkeysshowed that, in spite of their improved performance on left-rightdiscrimination, and their facilitated spatial learning in the presence ofallocentric landmarks, monkeys with hippocampal damage showed aprofound impairment on the trial-unique position recognition task and on therecognition span task. (ii) A second major section is dedicated to present anoverview of some experimental field studies on primate spatial learning andmemory in ecological settings. Even though this section does not reflect theauthors direct experience, we considered it of importance to provide the readerwith findings obtained from this type of studies, which may serve as animportant source of evidence for hypothesis development; and (iii) Finally, this paper includes a partial review of neuropsychological andneurophysiological studies on some of the parietal, temporal or frontal brainareas which have been implicated as subserving one or another mode ofspatial cognition. Thus, rather than attempting to provide an exhaustivereview, we have oriented this paper towards stimulating and capturing theinterest of the reader with a sample of the wide array of approaches that cancontribute to the study of spatial cognition in nonhuman primates. 2002 artículo científico 0211-2159 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=16923108 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=169 Psicológica application/pdf Universitat de València Psicológica (España) Num.1 Vol.23
