contents Self-Steem and changes in heart rate during laboratory-based stress Brian M. Hughes Psicología The relationship between self-esteem (SE), type of stressor, and fluctuationsin heart rate was assessed in a sample of 59 college students (40 females, 19males; with a mean age of 23.98 years (SEM = 1.0)). SE was measuredusing the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. The study assessed whether SEbuffers the cardiovascular response to stress by comparing responses to twotypes of stressor: mental arithmetic and verbal memory. As predicted, anSE x stressor interaction was found (p = 0.039). High-SE participants foundboth stressors moderately stressful but low-SE participants found the mentalarithmetic task particularly stressful. This is consistent with the view thatmental arithmetic elicits a specific fear that exceeds that associated withother domains of performance. The present study suggests that such fearaffects low-SE participants more strongly than high-SE participants. Theinteraction was statistically independent of potential physiologicalcontaminants such as gender, age, smoking, and caffeine consumption. 2003 artículo científico 0211-2159 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=16924105 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=169 Psicológica application/pdf Universitat de València Psicológica (España) Num.1 Vol.24
