Verstralen Psicología The Partial Credit Model (PCM) is sometimes interpreted asa model for stepwise solution of polytomously scored items, wherethe item parameters are interpreted as diculties of the steps. Itis argued that this interpretation is not justied. A model forstepwise solution is discussed. It is shown that the PCM is suitedto model sums of binary responses which are not supposed to bestochastically independent.
