  • REVISIÓN DE LOS ESTUDIOS SOBRE EXPOSICIÓN AL ALUMINIO Y ENFERMEDAD DE ALZHEIMER Loreto Suay Llopis Ferran Ballester Díez Salud Aluminum Drinking water Keywords: Alzheimer’s disease Review of the Studies on Exposure toAluminum and Alzheimer’s DiseaseA review has been made of the epidemiological studies publishedevaluating the role of aluminum as a risk factor for developingAlzheimer’s disease. A search for published studieswas conducted in the Medline database by combining the terms«Aluminum» and «Alzheimer’s disease». In most of the studiesreviewed, exposure to aluminum in drinking water was examined. These studies suggest that a relationship exists betweenaluminum (Al) and Alzheimer’s disease involving relativerisks of around 2 for populations exposed to Al concentrationsin drinking water higher than 0.1 mg/l. Types of exposure tothis metal by other means (food, medications and occupationalexposure) have received little attention. These epidemiologicalstudies entail certain methodological limitations, and their resultsare not consistent, so the results available to date thereforenot making it possible to clearly determine that any relationshipexists between exposure to aluminum and the etiology ofAlzheimer’s disease. Nevertheless, the toxic effect of aluminumon human health cannot be ruled out either, and thus exposureto aluminum should be monitored and limited as far aspossible. 2002 artículo científico 1135-5727 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=17000602 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=170 Revista Española de Salud Pública application/pdf Ministerio de Sanidad Revista Española de Salud Pública (España) Num.6 Vol.76
