- A silicoflagellate from the middle Albian of Austral Basin, Argentina Juan Pablo Pérez-Panera Ciencias de la Tierra Albian Variramus Argentina Austral Basin Calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphic investigations of Cretaceous sediments within the southern highlatitude Austral Basin, Argentina, have revealed the presence of a fragment of a silicoflagellate possibly belonging tothe species Variramus aculeifera (Deflandre) McCartney, Wise, Harwood and Gersonde. Although only a fragmentwas identified in the samples examined from this locality, its presence is important, as it is only the second documentedoccurrence of an Early Cretaceous silicoflagellate. The specimen was found in a subsurface sample from the informalPalermo Aike Formation at Austral Basin. This stratigraphic level is interpreted as middle Albian on the basis of calcareousnannofossil biostratigraphy. The specimen consists of a fragmented strut with broken spines at the base, which allowsthe observation of the hollow skeletal structure. The strut is curved and slightly expanded at the widest part, which arecharacteristics diagnostic of the genus Variramus.. 2015 artículo científico 0718-7092 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=173941333007 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=1739 Andean Geology application/pdf Servicio Nacional de Geología y Minería Andean Geology (Chile) Num.3 Vol.42
