Prohom Geografía Social books shipslog AtlanticOcean palaeoclimatology synoptic analysis In order to obtain more information about past climates, new palaeoclimatic techni-ques and sources are needed to evaluate the present climatic change. This paper focusseson one of these techniques, historical climatology, and on the usefulness of shipslog-books as a proxytool for climatic reconstructions. Many documents with climatic contentwere written during the golden period of Catalan sailing across the Atlantic Ocean (nine-teenth century). Naval journals and articles supply valuable information on the structureof the log-book, its evolution over the years and the methodology used for the transcrip-tion of weather data.
