  • Is architecture an active part of life? From the form-function paradigm to space as context to practice VM Netto Arquitectura form Space context function relation communicative practice How could architecture be part of life? Does architecture matter in the way we live, interact, experience the other? The present work searches answers to these old questions - the place of architectural space in human practice - progressively, identifying three 'layers of space': first the physical space of bodily action, the syntax of structures; second the semiotic space of typologies in visual perception; third the semantic space as context to communication. Taking the form-function dilemma as a starting point, it proposes a more complete picture of the pervasiveness of space in our practices and experiences, seeing its role in (a) setting up conditions of communication and expected behaviour; (b) as a trigger to the 'awareness of situation contexts' minimising risks of misunderstanding and ensuring the fluidity of interaction; (c) as an active resource in the definition of contents of communication. The paper aims to describe interpenetrations of space, language, and practice. 2005 artículo científico 1808-5741 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=193616192003 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=1936 Arquiteturarevista application/pdf Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos Arquiteturarevista (Brasil) Num.2 Vol.1
