contents Parental Styles and Harsh Parenting in a Sample of Mexican Women: A Structural Model Marcela Sotomayor Petterson Irasema Castell Ruiz Martha Frías-Armenta Víctor Corral Verdugo Psicología depression parental styles Child punishment One-hundred and fifty Mexican women were interviewed in regard to their parental beliefs and practices, theirlevel of depression, their degree of autonomy, how much they punished their children, and their perceptions aboutthe effects of child punishment. Factors representing such constructs were specified within a structural equationsmodel, and their relations were calculated. Results revealed that an authoritarian parental style had a significant, positive and direct effect on punishing children, but the authoritative style did not. The level of women’s depression,as well as the perception of punishment benefits, positively influenced child punishment, while the perception ofpunishment costs negatively affected harsh parenting. In turn, disciplinary parental beliefs positively affectedauthoritarian style and negatively affected women’s autonomy in family decisions, while this autonomy inhibitedauthoritarian parenting. 2004 artículo científico 0034-9690 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=28438108 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=284 Revista Interamericana de Psicología/Interamerican Journal of Psychology application/pdf Sociedad Interamericana de Psicología Revista Interamericana de Psicología/Interamerican Journal of Psychology (Puerto Rico) Num.1 Vol.38
