- To be aware of or else holding back emotions among inflammatory bowel disease patients: quality of life repercussions of some related aspects Ramiro Veríssimo Psicología Alexithymia Quality of life Emotional control Locus of control Pensée opératoire In a cross-sectional study we obtaineddata from 59 inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) outpatients, 22 men and 37women. The aim of this study was to furtherclarify the empirically assumed involvementof some aspects in alexithymiaand related constructs, while also exploringthe possible influence of these affectregulation variables in health relatedquality of life. The IBD questionnaire, in its stillunpublished form adopted in the presentstudy, proved once again to be a rathersensitive and valid instrument to assessqua-lity of life among IBD patients.Dismissing imaginal activities, generallyspeaking, was associated withalexithymia, and worst quality of life;while playful interactions, on the otherhand, were associated with an internallocus of control, control over the emotionalexpression, and a better quality oflife. Intense social life, in turn, associating externally oriented thinking, seemedmore as a way to divert emotional arousal.Communication of affects is associatedwith expressing emotions outward andlesser dysphoria; while difficulties communicatingwith others is associated withalexithymia - namely difficulty describingfeelings -, dysphoria, an external locusof control, expressing emotions inward, lack of positive affects and sensationseeking, and a poorer family functioning. The findings are consistent with thepostulates of the theoretical model underwhich alexithymia, as opposed to an internallocus of control and emotional control,is considered not only as conditioninglife and communication style, but thebasis for disorders of the affect regulationand somatic symptoms amplification aswell. 2001 artículo científico 0874-4696 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=28730108 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=287 Revista Portuguesa de Psicossomática application/pdf Sociedade Portuguesa de Psicossomática Revista Portuguesa de Psicossomática (Portugal) Num.1 Vol.3
