- The psychological interpretation of clinical pathology in pregnancy: a continuity hypothesis João Justo Psicología Obstetric pathology Psychological interpretation This paper focuses on the psychologicalinterpretation of obstetric pathology.Several investigations have demonstratedthe existence of important links betweenemotional functioning of pregnantwomen and different pathologies, as wellas problems during delivery. The psychologicalunderstanding of such phenomenaoften points to inner conflicts that pregnantwomen are unable to deal with or toexpress. We are raising a continuity hypothesisunderlining the observation thatwomen suffering from different obstetricpathologies may be considered as psychologicallysimilar and suffering from a continuumof related emotional factors, havingdifficulty in expressing their problems.According to this hypothesis, whatcharacterizes the different pathologies isthe moment when the emotional burdenbecomes too heavy and psychological conflictsare expressed by current physiologicalfunctioning.Obstetric problems occur at distinctmoments in the course of pregnancy. We can describe the onset and process of thespecific obstetric dysfunction each womansuffers. It remains unexplained why somewomen submerge under pathology at thebeginning of pregnancy, some in themiddle and, some only near the end ofpregnancy. There is a strong probabilitythat the best answer to this question liesin the patient´s resources for dealing withthe distinct demands of psychologicaldevelopment that parallel pregnancy. 2002 artículo científico 0874-4696 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=28740110 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=287 Revista Portuguesa de Psicossomática application/pdf Sociedade Portuguesa de Psicossomática Revista Portuguesa de Psicossomática (Portugal) Num.1 Vol.4
