An exploratory study Graça Pereira Vera Ramalho Pedro Dias Psicología Age Pregnancy Psychological variables We are assisting in our days to a postponingof pregnancy to a later period oflife. This paper describes an exploratorystudy on the effects of age on importantpsychological variables in pregnancy. Thesample is composed of two groups of pregnantwomen: above and below 35 years,and compared how these women differedon maternal adjustment, marital satisfactionand psychological morbidity. Husbands/partners of these women were alsoincluded in the sample and a comparisonbetween the couple was also assessed onthe first two variables.Results showed that younger womenwere better adjusted and had higher maritalsatisfaction. No differences were reportedin terms of psychological morbidity.Men reported being better adjustedthan their partners on attitudes towardspregnancy. Differences on whether thepregnancy was planned and number ofchildren were also assessed.
