Senna occidentalis (L.) Link is a perennial shrub native to South America and indigenous to tropical regions throughout the world. Current study evaluated the antimicrobial activity of aqueous and hydroalcoh olic extracts from S. occidentalis prepared from different parts of the plant. Ant imicrobial activity was a ssessed against standard pharmaceutical microorganisms by spectrop hotometry and microdilution technique. Escherichia coli was sensitive only to compounds extracted from seeds wh ich may be proteinaceous. A broader antimicrobial spectrum was demonstrated by the hydroalc oholic extract of seeds, mostly against Pseudomonas aeruginosa . The in vitro toxicity using mouse fibroblasts indicated that the extract might be a biocompatible ingredient for topical formulations, while the hydroalcoholic extr act of aerial parts demonstrated to be potentially cytotoxic. 2015 artículo científico 1679-9291 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=307239651002 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=3072 Acta Scientiarum.
