- Bird community as an indicator of biodiversity: results from quantitative surveys in Brazil Jacques M.E. Vielliard Multidisciplinaria (Ciencias Naturales y Exactas) birds census Brazil community biodiversity This short review presents the results obtained in several localities of Brazil on the composition of forest birdcommunities. Data were collected since the late 80s, after we introduced a new methodology of quantitativesurvey, based on acoustic identification and unlimited-radius point census. Although these data are stillscattered, they show uniquely precise and coherently comparative patterns of composition of forest birdcommunities. Our methodology has the advantage of being absolutely non-disturbing, highly efficient in thefield and immediately processed. Results confirm that the structure of a bird community is a good indicatorof biodiversity, particularly useful where biodiversity is high. Many of these data are available only inunpublished dissertations and abstracts of congress communications, or are being analysed. A cooperativeprogram is needed to promote new surveys and publish their results, as a contribution for measuring andmonitoring biodiversity, especially in complex endangered habitats. 2000 artículo científico 0001-3765 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=32772306 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=327 Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências application/pdf Academia Brasileira de Ciências Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências (Brasil) Num.3 Vol.72
