- Short- and Long-term memory: differential involvement of neurotransmitter systems and signal transduction cascades Daniela M. Barros Luciana A. Izquierdo Jorge H. Medina Iván Izquierdo Mônica R.M. Vianna Roger Walz Multidisciplinaria (Ciencias Naturales y Exactas) PKA PKC long MAPK Short SinceWilliam James (1890) first distinguished primary from secondary memory, equivalent to short- and longtermmemory, respectively, it has been assumed that short-term memory processes are in charge of cognitionwhile long-term memory is being consolidated. From those days a major question has been whether shorttermmemory is merely a initial phase of long-term memory, or a separate phenomena. Recent experimentshave shown that many treatments with specific molecular actions given into the hippocampus and relatedbrain areas after one-trial avoidance learning can effectively cancel short-term memory without affectinglong-term memory formation. This shows that short-term memory and long-term memory involve separatemechanisms and are independently processed. Other treatments, however, influence both memory typessimilarly, suggesting links between both at the receptor and at the post-receptor level, which should not besurprising as they both deal with nearly the same sensorimotor representations. This review examines recentadvances in short- and long-term memory mechanisms based on the effect of intra-hippocampal infusion ofdrugs acting upon neurotransmitter and signal transduction systems on both memory types. 2000 artículo científico 0001-3765 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=32772309 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=327 Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências application/pdf Academia Brasileira de Ciências Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências (Brasil) Num.3 Vol.72
