contents Spatial resolution influence on the identification of land cover classes in the Amazon environment Flávio J. Ponzoni Lênio S. Galvão José C.N. Epiphanio Multidisciplinaria (Ciencias Naturales y Exactas) Amazon region thematic maps remote sensing spatial resolution tropical rain forest To evaluate the role played by the spatial resolution in distinguishing land cover classes in theAmazon region, different levels of spatial resolution (60, 100, 120, 200 and 250 meters) were simulated from a Landsat 5Thematic Mapper (TM) image. Thematic maps were produced by visual interpretation from the original(30×30 meters) and simulated set of images. The map legend included primary forest, old and young woodysecondary succession, and non-forest. The results indicated that for the discrimination between primaryforest and non-forest, spatial resolution did not have great influence for pixel size equal or lower than 200meters. The contrary was verified for the identification of old and young woody secondary vegetation due totheir occurrence in small polygons. To avoid significant changes in the calculated area of these land covertypes, a spatial resolution better than 100 meters is required. This result is an indication that the use of thefuture Brazilian remote sensing satellite (SSR-1) for secondary succession identification may be unreliable, especially for latitudes between S10o and S15o where critical areas of deforestation are located and pixel sizeis expected to vary within the same scene from 100 meters (S10o) to 200 meters (S15o). 2002 artículo científico 0001-3765 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=32774411 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=327 Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências application/pdf Academia Brasileira de Ciências Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências (Brasil) Num.4 Vol.74
