Los primeros en abordarla fueron los mudejaristas españoles, los cuales extrapolaron conocimientos, teorías y terminología de los casos ibéricos a los existentes en los territorios colonizados. Esto ha llevado a un uso que no responde a las necesidades propias de dichos bienes.
