- Ambiguous devices: the use of dramatic emblems in Marlowe's Edward II (1592) Manuel J. GÓMEZ LARA Lengua y Literatura The extensive use of symbolic images in Eduard II has often been ctitically addressed ; in this paper I would Iike to focus upon the use of emblems as a source of dramatic ambiguity . We must keep in mind that both the author and his audiences were deeply trained in lhe mechanics of symbolic languages whereas OUT approach to these elements tends to narrow the focus of interpretation and force ínto them a coherent univocal reading which satisfies OUT need for rationality on the stage.
