- Two Spanish renderings of Philip Sidney’s “First Song” from Astrophil & Stella (1591): a reappraisal and a new proposal Jorge Luis Bueno Alonso Lengua y Literatura Translating poetry has always been a difficult, hard and complex task. If a translator decides to use prose when rendering a poetic text, he is opting for a completely justifiable approach to translation, although it seems perhaps an option too frequently adopted nowadays. An attempt to translate poetry into poetry should always be made when rendering a poetic text. The aim of this note is to discuss the question of poetic translation through a brief comparative analysis of the only two published Spanish translations of Philip Sidney’s Astrophil & Stella (1591), made by Fernando Galván (1991) and Sonia Hernández (2002).
