contents Semiosis as a Multimodal Process Ferdinando Arzarello Educación gestures embodiment inscriptions multimodality Semiotic resources Classical semiotic approaches are too narrow to investigate the didactical phenomenain the mathematics classroom. In addition to the standard semiotic resources used bystudents and teachers (e.g. written symbols and speech), other important semioticressources include also gestures, glances, drawings and extra-linguistic modes ofexpressions. However, these semiotic ressurces fit with difficulties within the constraintsof the classical definitions of semiotic systems. To overcome such difficulties I adopt avygotskian approach and present an enlarged notion of semiotic system, the semioticbundle, which reveals particularly useful for framing all the semiotic resources we find inthe learning processes in mathematics. The paper stresses some critical points in theusual description of the semiotic systems; it discusses the multimodal and embodiedparadigm, which is emerging in these last years from researches in psycholinguisticsand neuroscience and analyses gestures from a semiotic point of view. Then it introducesthe notion of semiotic bundle and exemplifies it through a case study. 2006 artículo científico 1665-2436 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=33509913 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=335 Revista Latinoamericana de Investigación en Matemática Educativa, RELIME application/pdf Colegio Mexicano de Matemática Educativa A.
