- Whither Experimental Semantics? Michael DEVITT Filosofía Mal lon Stich corpus Kripke he main goal of the paper is to propose a methodology for the theory of reference in which experi- ments feature prominently. These experiments should primarily test linguistic usage rather than the fo lk’s referential intuitions. The proposed methodology ur ges the use of: (A) philosophers’ referential intui tions, both informally and, occasionally, scientifically g athered; (B) the corpus, both informally and scient ifically gathered; (C) elicited production; and, occasionall y, (D) folk’s referential intuitions. The most nove l part of this is (C) and that is where most of the experimen tal work should be. The secondary goal of the paper is to defend my earlier paper “Experimental Semantics” from the criticisms of Machery, Mallon, Nichols, a nd Stich in “If Folk Intuitions Vary, Then What?” They charge that I have seriously misunderstood their g oal in “Semantics, Cross-Cultural Style” and that many of my arguments are “largely irrelevant”. I argue t hat these charges are baseless. 2012 artículo científico 0495-4548 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=339730818001 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=3397 THEORIA.
