contents Corpus linguistics at the service of English teachers Leonardo Juliano Recski Lengua y Literatura EFL corpus linguistics language awareness linguistic description ESL teachers´ questions This paper contemplates how corpus evidence might be used to address teachers´ questionsabout English grammar and suggests that corpus linguistics has an important role to playin raising their awareness to linguistic features and patterns. The article surveys a range ofgrammatical questions posted by EFL/ESL teachers on four Orkut communities devoted tothe teaching and learning of English. It concentrates on three specifi c types of questions:synonymous lexical items which function differently and are reported to be difficult toteach and explain; linguistic evidence that contradicts the prescriptive grammar rules thatteachers have been taught during their education; and collocations that teachers attempt toexplicate. In attempting to address the teachers´ questions, corpus evidence is used to offerpossible explanations. It is suggested that the use of corpus data in addressing these questionsis not only convincing but also leads to discoveries of patterns and meanings whichmight not be found in other reference materials such as grammars and dictionaries. 2006 artículo científico 0716-5811 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=35201717 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=352 Literatura y Lingüística application/pdf Universidad Católica Silva Henríquez Literatura y Lingüística (Chile) Num.17
