- La contribution de la «squadra belga» au Concile Vatican II Mathijs Lamberigts Leo Declerck Historia Squadra Belga Belgian bishops Belgian theologians second vatican council catholic university of louvain In this article, the result of thorough archival research, we want to present the role of the so-called «squadra Belga» at the second vatican council. Our contribution clearly shows that the squadra Belga consisted of a rather small group of Belgian bishops and theologians, who knew each other very well: many of whom had studied together in rome, residing in the Belgian college, a college owned by the Belgian bishops. moreover, the Belgian bishops appointed the professors of theology at the catholic university of louvain and interacted with theologians on a regular basis. Between the bishops and the theologians -some of them had been study-mates- there existed a mutual trust. furthermore, several of these theologians were appreciated internationally for their research and engagement in ecumenism, biblical sciences, patristics and the like. contrary to several theologians in france and germany, the louvain professors had never been the subject of condemnations. the Belgians were actively involved and played an important role in the drafting of what would become lumen gentium, dei verbum, unitatis redintegratio, dignitatis Humanae and gaudium et spes, only to mention those documents in which their impact is most visible.
