  • «Porta fidei salutisque». Der Bildzyklus der romanischen Türflügel in St. Maria im Kapitol zu Köln Ralf van Bühren Historia graphy Romanesque church doors Christian icono image of Christ The Romanesque door leaves of the church «St. Maria im Kapitol» in Cologne (1040-1065) pertain to the only wooden door north of the Alps preserved from the Middle Ages. For almost 900 years they stood in the north portal of the trefoil choir whose design is based on the floor plan of the choir construction of the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem. The Archbishop of Cologne used to celebrate the first of the three Christmas Masses in «St. Maria». During the Middle Ages, high-ranking personalities, such as the elected German kings on the way to their coronation in Aachen, would enter through this door. The people of Cologne also had access to the wooden door arrayed with 26 reliefs depicting scenes of the life and pas- sion of Christ. The door was the gateway to the church, and mystagogically speaking, to faith and salvation.
