- Benedetto XV, la guerra e le posizioni dei vescovi italiani Caterina Ciriello Historia Holy See World War i Benedict xv Italian bishops The cruelty of the First World War changed many lives, dividing communities, as well as the society as a whole. The intent of Benedict xv was to limit as much as possible the damage of the war. Many bishops were committed to take care of their flocks putting aside patriotic feelings; others were unpopular for their obstinacy and inflexibility, causing a number of problems for the Holy See. Benedict xv had to do with shepherds who were often naive and others who were all-too-clever, at all however, as a true father he counseled prudence and wisdom to each of them for the good of Italy and the good of the Church.
