contents Domestic Politics, Prestige, and War: The Emergence of Chile’s Democratic Status Narrative Cristóbal Bywaters Relaciones Internacionales Chile Status prestige concertación pinochet regime The domestic politics of international status unfolds beyond its foreign policy implications. Sometimes actors engage in status politics to pursue their domestic political aims. Looking at the opposition to Pinochet in Chile, I introduce the notion of the democratic status narrative, which emerged as a means of contesting authoritarianism. The narrative first entered the public sphere during the 1978 Beagle Channel crisis in the pages of opposition magazines, rarely consulted by scholars of international affairs. As it grew more prevalent, it became a central element in the formation of the Concertación coalition’s influential foreign policy elite, shaping post-authoritarian foreign policy. 2023 artículo científico 0034-7329 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=35874535005 https://www.redalyc.org/journal/358/35874535005/ https://www.redalyc.org/journal/358/35874535005/html/ https://www.redalyc.org/journal/358/35874535005/35874535005.epub https://www.redalyc.org/journal/358/35874535005/movil 10.1590/0034-7329202300106 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=358 Revista Brasileira de Política Internacional application/pdf Universidade de Brasília Revista Brasileira de Política Internacional (Brasil) Num.1 Vol.66
