Perceptions of social and political inequality among the elites Ana Fernandes Pinto Historia This article attempts to present an overview of the missionaries view of thesocial and political scenario of Japan, which resulted from their increased interactionwith the Japanese elite. These impressions, reconstructed from letters sent bymembers of the Society of Jesus living in the Japanese archipelago in the 16th century,are however without doubt only a partial and selective portrayal of the prevalentrealities. In the first place because it depended on the logic of the missionariesoperations, i.e. the specific elite with whom they interacted and the degree of successor failure of the contact that they managed to establish. Secondly, because thoseimpressions are based on Western cultural standards.
