- The Philippine colonial elite and the evangelization of Japan Maria Fernanda G. de los Arcos Historia The dawn of the Spanish presence in the Philippines also marked thebeginning of relations with an almost unknown geographical and politicalspace. Moreover, the Portuguese had arrived in East Asia long before theSpaniards.
