contents A 17th century buddhist treatise refuting christianity José Miguel Pinto dos Santos Historia In this article, we present and succinctly analyze the argumentsadvanced by one anti-Christian treatise, the Taiji Jashû-ron, dating from1648, written by a Buddhist monk, Sessô Sôsai. This work, written with thepurpose of guiding the Buddhist clergy in their duties as instruments of thegovernment in its anti-Christian repression, is the only known work thatwas produced with this purpose by a cultured Buddhist before the end ofthe 17th century. It is a remarkable work because it illustrates the transmissionand the reasoned rejection of one of the principal constituents of aforeign culture. It is also a unique work, because its argumentation is notbased primarily on Neo-Confucianism, the dominant ideology in TokugawaJapan, which served as basis for most of the other anti-Christian refutations, but is instead based on orthodox Buddhist arguments. 2002 artículo científico 0874-8438 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=36100405 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=361 Bulletin of Portuguese - Japanese Studies application/pdf Universidade Nova de Lisboa Bulletin of Portuguese - Japanese Studies (Portugal) Num.4
