| contents | Dekasseguis. Japanese - Brazilian Immigrants in Japan and the Question of Identity Elisa Massae Sasaki Historia From the mid 1980s onwards, Brazilians descended fromJapanese have been going to Japan as migrant workers who occupyunskilled jobs, as part of a phenomenon that is known as theDekassegui Movement. In this context, the concept of the identity ofthe Nikkei (descendants of Japanese) has been the cause of muchdebate, prompting us to reflect about what it means to be both Japaneseand Brazilian, i.e. what it means to be Japanese in Brazil andBrazilian in Japan. In the first place, this article seeks to clarify the question of the socalledhomeland of these migrants Brazil or Japan? Subsequently, it thenexpounds upon the legal aspects of this migration, especially in the lightof the amendment to the Japanese immigration control laws, promulgatedin 1990. In this context, it briefly traces the scenario prior to thepresence of Brazilians in Japan, referring specifically to illegal immigrantsin the Land of the Rising Sun, particularly to those of Asian origin.Given this, we shall then outline, in general terms, the characteristicsof this migratory movement of Brazilians who are descendants ofJapanese to the land of their ancestors, dividing it into three differentperiods: the mid 1980´s; the late 1980´s and early 1990´s; and the mid1990´s. Once we have established the context, we shall then proceed todiscuss the question of identity that comes into play in such thresholdsituations, in which diverse aspects are negotiated, thus configuring avirtual game of identity. 2002 artículo científico 0874-8438 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=36100406 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=361 Bulletin of Portuguese - Japanese Studies application/pdf Universidade Nova de Lisboa Bulletin of Portuguese - Japanese Studies (Portugal) Num.4 |
