contents Valuation of composition and evaporation behavior of commercial thinner samples expended in Mexico City Joel Reza Gabriela Salazar Arturo Trejo Ciencias de la Tierra The chemical composition of 34 thinner samples obtained in the Metropolitan Area of Mexico City wasquantified by gas chromatography. Both the total number and the composition of each of the identifiedcompounds showed great variations from one sample to another. Nonetheless, toluene, n-hexane, acetoneand nietliaiiol were the iiiost frequently and highest concentration conipounds identified in this study. Byusing a thermodynaniic model of solvent blend evaporation, which accounts for mixture non-idealities intentis ol coinporient activity coefíicients, the evaporation time versus solvent composition (solventbalance) curves were calculated for 1 O of theanalyzed samples. The calculated evaporatioti rate showed abroad specúum in their behavior (fast, intermediate and low). Regarding solvait balance, in the 10 samplesconsidered, tlie low solvency components (diluents) were evaporated disproportionately slow in regard tolatent and high solvency (active) solvents. Tlie high solvency components rapidly became depleted in theresidual solvent. This leads to the undesirable effect known as solvent imbalance. The appreciable differencesobserved in the total nuniber of compounds and iii their compositions, along with tlie evaporatioiibehavior of the analyzed samples lead to conclude that apparently no technical, environmental or toxicologicalcriteria were applied to formulate the cornrnercial analyzed samples. 1997 artículo científico 0188-4999 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=37013205 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=370 Revista Internacional de Contaminación Ambiental application/pdf Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Revista Internacional de Contaminación Ambiental (México) Num.2 Vol.13
