- Rhetoric and reward in higher education: how the pillars of tradition impede academic reform and what might be done about it John F. LeBaron Educación A contemporary deluge of negative polemic about higher education hasresulted in an alarming erosion of public support. This paper examines theorganizational traditions of "the university" in the context of improved teachingand academic reform. It takes the position that small scale, individual initiativesto improve university teaching can initially inform a more general population ofhigher education stakeholders as they re-think their basic purposes, missions, and collective actions, but that systemic change requires system widecommitment. In particular, issues related to university incentives and rewardsare examined in the context of structural practice and tradition, with adiscussion of the challenges of institutional change and survival. 2001 artículo científico 0871-9187 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=37414202 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=374 Revista Portuguesa de Educação application/pdf Universidade do Minho Revista Portuguesa de Educação (Portugal) Num.2 Vol.14
