| contents | Save Hostos: Politics and Community Mobilization to Save a College in the Bronx, 19731978 Gerald Meyer Sociología radicalism South Bronx social movement student movement Puerto Rican politics From the fall of 1973 to the spring of 1978, Eugenio María de HostosCommunity College, a component of the City University of New Yorkthat first offered classes in the fall of 1970, in the heart of what was thendefined as the South Bronx, was the site of one of the most prolongedand successful mass movements of the 1970s in New York City.During that time, students, staff, faculty, and members of the communitymobilized three successive mass campaigns to obtain facilities for thecollege and to prevent the Board of Higher Education from closing thecollege. These campaigns utilized a combination of tactics that effectivelypoliticized the campus and attracted widespread support from boththe leadership and the ordinary residents of the Latino communities. The willingness of those within and outside the Hostos campus to committhemselves, and in some instances risk arrest to ensure the survival of thecollege, reflected the degree to which Hostos embodied, for large sectorsof the Latino community, a concrete achievement in the fight againstdiscrimination as well as the fight for bilingual education. The successof this, at times, conflictive movement in achieving goals also demonstratesthe potential and effectiveness of movements that have secured a massbase. 2003 artículo científico 1538-6279 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=37715104 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=377 Centro Journal application/pdf The City University of New York Centro Journal (Estados Unidos de América) Num.1 Vol.XV |
