Goergen Sociología memory hybridity Latino art Bibiana Suarez art and gender Bibiana Suárez, a Puerto Rican artist who lives and worksin Chicago, Illinois, constructs her own Caribbean space, and her own Puerto Rican space in her 1998 series Domin /Domino. In this paper I will analyze Bibianas use of opposites, her mocking/embrace of the colonizer/colonizeddichotomies and her manipulation of culture in order topiece together what Arcadio Díaz Quiñones has calledLa memoria rota (The broken memory). From her exiledposition Suárez plays Domin with her audience forcing themto read the domino pieces like one would read history, onlyit is her own construction, it is herstory. The Seriesbecomes a voyage into the viewers own broken memories, and if one decides to play from either side of the linguisticpole Domin / Domino then one is compelled to question theperception of space in terms of gender as well as in terms ofculture and most importantly in terms of memory 2003 artículo científico 1538-6279 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=37715213 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=377 Centro Journal application/pdf The City University of New York Centro Journal (Estados Unidos de América) Num.2 Vol.XV |
