- A South Bronx Latin Music Tale Roberta L. Singer Elena Martínez Sociología Salsa Bronx palce mambo Latin Music When the story of Latin popular music (salsa) is toldin popular and scholarly writings, the South Bronx isconsistently overlooked despite the critical role itplayed in the development of that music. From thelate 1940s through the early 1970s Hunts Point,Longwood, and Mott Haven were thriving PuertoRican communities where an explosion of musicalactivity and creativity was taking place. This articleexamines the confluence of people and places thatcreated an environment for the growth of Latinmusic in the South Bronx. While highlighting thesites that provided a locus for performers to adaptand reinterpret predominantly Afro-Cuban musicforms and styles to express their urban South Bronxreality, the work reveals the symbiotic relationshipbetween music, place and community; issues ofidentity are an underlying theme but are not thecentral focus of the work. 2004 artículo científico 1538-6279 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=37716113 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=377 Centro Journal application/pdf The City University of New York Centro Journal (Estados Unidos de América) Num.1 Vol.XVI
