contents Profetas de la cultura: Notes on the Puerto Rican Reggae of Cultura Profética Rubén A. Gaztambide Fernández Sociología reggae popular music youth culture Spanish reggae Cultura Profética As migrant music, reggae is an ever-changing style, as it slidesinto the open interstices of location and time wherever ittravels. In Puerto Rico, reggae has assumed local particularities,as the hands of young people redefine and differentiateit. This music brings together not only the elementsthat identify it as a particularly Puerto Rican reggae, but itreflects the conditions under which young people embraceit as “their” music. Most of the research regarding youthculture approaches their work as passive reflection ofmedia consumption, or as antagonistic response to theadult world. These approaches view youth as a developmentalstage into adulthood, and fail to capture thelived dialectic that emerges from the insights of youththemselves about their work. Through interviews withmembers of the Puerto Rican reggae group CulturaProfética, and a careful look at their music, lyrics, and performancepractices, I’ve tried to understand their work asa production of culture rather than simply consumptionor resistance. 2004 artículo científico 1538-6279 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=37716215 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=377 Centro Journal application/pdf The City University of New York Centro Journal (Estados Unidos de América) Num.2 Vol.XVI
