contents The racialization of mexican americans and puerto ricans: 1890s-1930s Víctor M. Rodríguez Domínguez Sociología race racism Latinos Chicanos Hispanics This article describes the basic processes of racialization. The paper begins by analyzing how Mexican Americans andPuerto Ricans were racialized during the first decades of the20th century. This was a significant time, when theideologies of scientific racism and imperialism became partof the popular culture; it was also a time when PuertoRicans and Mexicans were being colonized, both in theirnations of origin and in their diasporic homelands. Whilethere is some significant descriptive work on contemporaryracialization in the Chicano and Boricua experience, very little comparative and theoretical understandingsupports these efforts. By looking at the patterns thatemerge in the process of subordinating, controlling, and classifying Mexican Americans and Puerto Ricans,we gain a perspective on the role of colonialism (bothinternal and external), as well as the role of class andgender in racialization, and we begin to create the basisfor a theoretically grounded perspective on racialization. 2005 artículo científico 1538-6279 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=37717104 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=377 Centro Journal application/pdf The City University of New York Centro Journal (Estados Unidos de América) Num.1 Vol.XVII
