By revisitingthe social mobility and segmented assimilationliterature, which speaks to the downward mobilitytrends of newcomers who identify with nativeminorities, I re-theorize notions of incorporationby describing political responses by low-incomecommunities about the welfare discourse. In thisway, I introduce a more nuanced understanding ofimmigrant-native relations in regard to the welfarestate, the labor market, and each other.
