contents Aesthetics of exile: The construction of Nuyorican identity in the art of El Taller Boricua Taína B. Caragol-Barreto Sociología Nuyorican Art Taller Boricua Nuyorican poets diasporic experience Puerto Rican art and identity In his 1983 essay Reflexions on Exile, the cultural critic EdwardSaid defines exiles in the broadest sense as people who areprevented from returning to their land. He also argues that thedisplacement experienced by exiles in the foreign land calls for areconstruction of their historical past as a way to find a commonground where they can identify as a group, overcoming theirsolitude. Although Puerto Ricans in the United States are émigrésrather than ostracized people, several conditions, such as themassiveness of the Diaspora launched with Operation Bootstrap, and the social and racial discrimination faced by Puerto Ricansin the metropolis made of this experience one marked by thetrauma of social displacement. This article examines the Nuyoricanartistic movement of the sixties and seventies as an attempt toreconstruct that fragmented history that Said identifies asintrinsic to the exile. I will argue that some common elementsthat surface in the art-production of El Taller Boricua, and theNuyorican Poets, such as the use of Taíno and African imagery, the critique of the Spanish colonization in Puerto Rico, thereference to social displacement, and the subversion of artisticconventions function together to create an “aesthetics of the PuertoRican exile.” 2005 artículo científico 1538-6279 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=37717202 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=377 Centro Journal application/pdf The City University of New York Centro Journal (Estados Unidos de América) Num.2 Vol.XVII
