contents Nuyorican visionary: Jorge Soto and the evolution of an Afro-Taíno aesthetic at Taller Boricua Yasmin Ramírez Sociología Art Taino Santeria Nuyorican Jorge Soto In this essay, I examine the cross-fertilization betweenvisual and verbal tropes in the works of Jorge Soto. Mydiscussion concentrates on analyzing the visual artproduced by Jorge Soto in the mid-1970s to late 1970s, aperiod when the poets and artists at Taller Boricua andother spaces were most intensely engaged in definingthe meaning of the term Nuyorican and determininghow their works related to the art and poetry producedon the island. I argue that through reading the poetry ofhis colleagues, and experimenting with writing poetryon his own, Jorge Soto developed synthetic ways ofpicturing his bi-cultural background that mirrored theNuyorican poets’ practice of fusing Spanish and English.I additionally examine the weaving of Afro-Taíno andSanteria motifs in Soto’s works. 2005 artículo científico 1538-6279 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=37717203 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=377 Centro Journal application/pdf The City University of New York Centro Journal (Estados Unidos de América) Num.2 Vol.XVII
