contents Four decades of Puerto Rican emigration: Different contexts, same realities Victor C. Simpson Sociología Perea Emigration La carreta Malasangre Puerto Rico This article compares the treatment of the subjectof Puerto Rican emigration to the United States intwo outstanding dramatic works of the Island’sliterature—René Marqués´s La carreta and RobertoRamos-Perea´s Malasangre. While acknowledging theinevitable differences, such as the socioeconomicstatus of the emigrants and the area of the mainlandwhere they settle, the article argues that, even thoughmore than thirty years separate the two works, there are striking similarities. These include the fundamentalreason for emigration, the effect of emigrationon the family and the question of return to PuertoRico. If these two plays are rooted in the reality of theirrespective eras, as indeed they are, then it may beconcluded that, in terms of the fundamental issuesthat influence and affect emigrants to the mainlandbefore and after they migrate, there has not been anysignificant change, even after more than thirty years 2006 artículo científico 1538-6279 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=37718203 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=377 Centro Journal application/pdf The City University of New York Centro Journal (Estados Unidos de América) Num.2 Vol.XVIII
