- Un "pequeño Pittsburgh" borincano: la ciudad imaginada del discurso desarrollista de Fomento Gabriel Villaronga Sociología develoment Puerto Rico Teodoro Moscoso industrialization Operation Bootstrap When Teodoro Moscoso nicknamed the first factories built by the state in the1940s as little Pittsburgh, the director of the Development Company not onlyexpressed the enthusiasm of many about the potential of industrialization, but also portrayed the initiative of his agency as a formidable undertaking. The islands state factories were the axis of a discourse characterized byoptimistic visions about the abundance that industrial development couldprovide. Although the little Pittsburgh of the Development Company was aresponse to the economic maladies of the island, the discourse of developmentintroduced unforseen challenges when it configured a new identity for PuertoRicans as beneficiaries of manufacture. While many aspects that seemed tocontradict industrialization came under question, such as the case of shantytowns, many other aspects that promised to create a modern Puerto Ricogained acceptance, such as the possibility of imitating North Americantechnology and production. Although the state factories proved to be fleeting, they generated support in favor of industrialization as well as divergentperspectives about their implementation. 2007 artículo científico 1538-6279 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=37719210 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=377 Centro Journal application/pdf The City University of New York Centro Journal (Estados Unidos de América) Num.2 Vol.XIX
